Hypnosis and Childbirth
Hypnosis for Pain Management during Labour and Natural Childbirth
HypnoBirthing® and The Mongan Method
Childbirth is a time for celebration, joy and – as millions of women say – pain! BUT – it doesn’t have to be this way. Yes, you can use drugs if you are prepared for the side effects of drugs like epidurals, OR you can explore another option – HypnoBirthing®.
HypnoBirthing® – The Mongan Method – is very new in South Africa, but in the UK and the USA it has been used by thousands of women to manage the pain experienced in childbirth. Read some of their stories to see why HypnoBirthing® is an alternative to that terribly painful ordeal known as childbirth – what parents are saying about HypnoBirthing ®. Hypnosis and Childbirth
Using hypnosis you can capture the power of the mind-body connection, and use it for a more joyful, pain-free childbirth. Hypnosis creates a state of deep relaxation that eliminates fear and anxiety from the birthing experience. This is done by changing your mind’s perception of pain, so that what you experience is interpreted by your mind as pressure rather than pain.

Fear and Anxiety around Childbirth
In our Western culture we have become removed from the mind-body connection. Women no longer rely on instinct and listen to their bodies to experience natural childbirth. Western culture teaches us that childbirth is an agonising experience to be dreaded. This fear creates tension, which increases the pain as your muscles contract rather than relaxing:
- Fear and anxiety create adrenaline which tightens the cervix causing the birth process to slow down.
- Fear causes your breathing to become shallower and faster, reducing the oxygen circulating in your body and getting to the baby.
- The result is that your heart pumps more quickly, raising your blood pressure.
Contact Linda Clarke and discover how using hypnosis in childbirth will help you remain calm and positive throughout your labour, and experience less pain.
Hypnosis and Pain Management
During labour and childbirth you will use hypnosis to move into a deeply relaxed state. This will help you to breathe deeply and rhythmically, increasing the flow of oxygen in your blood system. This oxygen helps to keep your baby calm and stable, and stimulates the production of Oxytocin – the hormone responsible for contractions. As well as keeping you relaxed, the use of hypnosis techniques makes use of the body’s own chemicals – known as endorphins – to block pain. Using hypnosis, you will be able to tap into the brain to release the natural ‘pain killers’ as needed.
Your training in hypnosis will help you experience one or more of the following:
- A totally pain-free labour – most people are capable of achieving hypnotic anaesthesia, if they are willing and able to work at it.
- Minimise your need for anaesthesia – this amount is significantly less with women who use hypnosis.
- Relaxation and minimal anxiety – some women use hypnosis for deep relaxation. The reduction of fear and tension increases the pain threshold of the mother.
- A shortened first stage of labour by several hours.
- Decreased shock and quicker recovery.
Research in obstetrics has shown that, when women use hypnosis during childbirth, there are fewer forceps deliveries, and much less need for an episiotomy. This is due to the mother’s relaxed state in the final stages of labour, which results in very little tearing as the muscles are not in spasm.
You need to practice these hypnosis techniques before your baby is born, so don’t waste time – contact Linda Clarke today.
Research on Pain Management during Labour & Childbirth
Using hypnosis for pain management during labor and childbirth is not a new idea. In 1955 the British Medical Association approved hypnotherapy as a valid medical treatment and an effective form of pain management during childbirth. The American Medical Association approved hypnotherapy in 1958. Hypnosis is so widely accepted in America among physicians, psychologists and dentists that it is considered mainstream. Clients who are allergic to anaesthetics have successfully used hypnosis to undergo medical surgery with no drugs and no pain.

What you can do with Hypnotic Anaesthesia
- Glove Anaesthesia – It is possible to numb any area of the body using hypnotic suggestion. This is called Glove Anaesthesia. The hand is first numbed using hypnotic suggestion and this numbing sensation is then transferred by the hand to any area of the body.
- Dissociation –With this approach you imagine your pain as something else and you transform it using your imagination.
- Visualization – This technique allows you to imagine yourself in a soothing, comforting setting. You cannot feel pleasure and pain simultaneously, so you close out the experience of pain by maintaining a vivid mental image of a comfortable setting.
